Sunday Conversations

In this week’s Sunday Conversations with the Rileys, they delve into the profound realm of public education with Dr. Dawn Jenkins, the Principal of South Columbus Elementary School. With 28 years of experience and insight in the field, Dr. Jenkins brings years of insight to the table.

According to Dr. Jenkins, public education is a cornerstone for children to forge their path in life. It serves as the building blocks upon which young minds can cultivate their interests, preparing them to pursue a career or higher education.

An advocate for parental involvement, Dr. Jenkins says parents play a pivotal role as their children’s first teachers.

She emphasizes the critical importance of early childhood development, highlighting the formative years from ages 1 to 5 as crucial for laying the groundwork for future academic success. Statistically, reading to formative and early-age children not only enhances language acquisition but also fosters a lifelong love for learning.

Public education is often hailed as the great equalizer, providing all students, regardless of their parent’s income, with the opportunity to receive a quality education. This assurance is a testament to the strength and fairness of our public education system.

Dr. Jenkins urges parents to enroll their children in preschool and programs like Head Start, to provide their children with opportunities for kindergarten readiness. However, the responsibility for a child’s education extends beyond the school walls. Dr. Jenkins stresses the necessity for a collaborative effort between schools and parents, stating “Schools cannot do it alone.”
