Congressman Sanford Bishop Mourns the Passing of Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter

ALBANY, Ga. – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement regarding the death of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter:

“It is absolutely heartbreaking, for Georgia and our great nation, to have lost former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Drawing on life’s experiences, disappointments, challenges, and triumphs, she became an advocate for women, children, the elderly, and the vulnerable. She worked to improve mental health care, encourage immunizations, increase access to housing, promote public health, and support peace throughout the world.

“Multiple generations enjoy a better quality of life and greater opportunities because of her love, compassion, resilience, and dedication. The lives of countless people – whether or not they knew it – were touched by the work she did, aided, and inspired. She was the ultimate partner and equal to her beloved husband, President Jimmy Carter. Together, they changed the world for the better.

“To the very end, she made a difference. Her legacy lives on through the many institutions that she and her husband founded and supported. Right here in Middle and Southwest Georgia, we have a poignant reminder of that legacy through the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving.

“I am blessed and honored to have known Rosalynn Carter for over four decades and to have worked with her and President Carter throughout the years. My wife, Vivian, and I offer our prayers and deepest condolences to President Carter, the entire Carter Family, and all those across the world who mourn her loss.”
