It’s been a great week in our local sports scene! From unexpected upsets to standout

performances, the action on the field has kept fans on the edge of their seats. Let’s dive into the highlights and dissect what made this week in sports so memorable.

 

Main Event Recap:

In a stunning display of dominance, Alabama’s Central-Phenix City Red Devils have soared to the top of Baseball America’s national rankings, securing the coveted No. 1 spot. Led by coach AJ Kehoe, the Red Devils boast an impressive 29-1 record, with their sole loss this season being a narrow 3-2 defeat against Mill Creek, Georgia, on March 2nd. Notably, Central is the lone representative from Alabama in Baseball America’s top 35, further solidifying their status as a powerhouse in high school baseball. Fresh off a Class 7A state title win in 2022 and a runner-up finish last year, the Red Devils are on an astounding 19-game winning streak. Their next challenge? A highly anticipated showdown against Auburn will be held this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. and Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

 

Youth in Sports:

Last weekend, the Columbus Girls Flag Football League organized an exciting Free Camp at Shirley B. Winston Football Field, welcoming girls of all ages who have an interest in playing flag football. The event was a resounding success, drawing in a largenumber of enthusiastic participants eager to learn and engage in the sport. Throughout the camp, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a variety of skill-building drills, led by experienced coaches who provided valuable guidance and instruction. From honing their passing and catching techniques to mastering defensive strategies, the girls immersed themselves in the fundamentals of flag football, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship along the way.

The Free Camp served as a fantastic introduction to the sport for many, offering a glimpse into the exciting world of flag football and igniting a passion for the game among participants. It provided a supportive and inclusive environment where girls of all skill levels could come together to learn, grow, and have fun. The positive energy and camaraderie shared throughout the camp highlighted the sense of community fostered by the Columbus Girls Flag Football League. Registration is open until April 19th, there’s still plenty of time for girls to sign up and join in on the action. Player Spotlight:

Congratulations to junior Katie Casto for her remarkable victory in the Georgia HS Steeplechase 2K last week! Katie clinched first place at Marietta High School, crossing the finish line with an impressive 18 barriers. Currently ranked first in the State of Georgia for the Steeplechase, Katie has secured a spot to compete at Nike Nationals at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in June.

 

High School Baseball Update:

In high school baseball action, Hardaway High School emerged triumphant with a 10-4 victory over the Carver Tigers. Standout performances from Dante Hill and Kemari Luttrell propelled Hardaway to victory, highlighting their prowess on the diamond. Hill went 4 for 3 with a single and double and Hardaway Kemari Luttrell went a perfect 3 for 3 with 3 singles. Looking ahead, several exciting matchups are on the schedule for this week, promising more thrilling baseball action for fans across the region.
