This week’s Davis Broadcasting Sunday conversation topic is “One Pay Check Away”, with Liz Grimes from South West GA Housing Opportunities, to shed light on the pressing issue of homelessness in Columbus.
Grimes is a local philanthropist who has worked with the homeless community for the past two decades. South West GA Housing Opportunities prioritizes housing assistance, mainly focusing on facilitating referrals from 211 and aiding individuals in securing a place to live. Additionally, they provide crucial prevention programs, offering utility assistance to those in need.
In the United States, it is reported that there are four different types of homelessness: transitional, episodic, chronic, and hidden. Often stemming from issues such as abuse, job loss, or health challenges.
Grimes highlighted the alarming rise in living costs over recent years, attributing it to the increasing homeless population over the recent years. Programs are available to those in need of help.
Individuals currently unhoused or in need of assistance are encouraged to contact 211 to explore available resources such as housing support, utility assistance, and access to food banks. 211 serves as a vital link, connecting individuals with many social services within our local community.
If you would like to get involved in the community, Grimes advises individuals to consider volunteering for local non-profits such as United Way, Home for Good programs, and Safe House Ministries. Together, we can work towards alleviating homelessness by engaging with established local programs.
