About the Columbus Branch of the NAACP:
The Columbus Branch of the NAACP was co-founded in 1940. Just one year prior, Dr. Thomas Brewer, a legendary local civil rights activist, had founded a chapter of the NAACP in Columbus in 1939. During his leadership, he designated Primus King, another civil rights activist, to attempt to vote in the primary election in 1944 in Muscogee County and raised the funds to fight his case in court where they later won. After his success, Dr. Brewer initiated successful black voter registration drives in Columbus, campaigned for hiring of black police officers, fought for equitable funding of black schools, the racial integration of public schools, and to integrate the golf course on Columbus’ South Commons. Today’s Branch continues to fight for equity and equality in all aspects of life, and may be reached via its website at www.naacpcolumbus.com and on social media at www.FaceBook.com/colsganaacp. Its branch office is located at The Corporate Center, 233 12th Street, Suite 515, Columbus, Ga. 31901.
