Tuskegee–Morehouse Classic to Relocate to Montgomery in 2025

Storied HBCU rivalry begins new chapter in Alabama’s capital

COLUMBUS, Ga. — The Tuskegee–Morehouse Classic, known as the “Granddaddy of all HBCU Classics,” is on the move once again. After a highly anticipated return to Columbus in 2024 following a three-year stint in Birmingham, Ala., the historic matchup is now slated for Montgomery, Ala., in 2025.

Founded in 1902, the football rivalry between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College is one of the oldest and most celebrated in Black college athletics. The Classic itself was formalized in 1936 and initially created to provide entertainment for African American civilians and U.S. Army personnel stationed at Fort Benning (now Fort Moore), as well as the broader Columbus and Phenix City communities.

What began as a regional rivalry evolved into a nationally recognized cultural celebration, complete with parades, concerts and community reunions. For decades, the Classic has drawn thousands of alumni, fans and supporters from across the country.

“We are saddened to know that the Classic will not be returning to Columbus for its 86th year,” said Lisa Goodwin, chairperson of the Tuskegee–Morehouse Committee. “We were hopeful the game would stay here. This year, Morehouse is the home team, and they had the option to select the location. Unfortunately, they chose not to return to Columbus. The community was looking forward to the event, and Tuskegee University was excited about coming back. We hope the Classic eventually finds a permanent home—and we hope that home will be here in Columbus, Georgia, where its significance is deeply felt.”

A Storied History

For more than 80 years, A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium in Columbus was the proud home of the Classic. From 1936 to 2019, the event became a cherished tradition, contributing significantly to the city's cultural and economic landscape.

In 2021, the game moved to Birmingham’s Legion Field, where it remained for three seasons. Organizers hoped to expand the Classic’s reach by leveraging a larger venue and broader exposure. However, the shift brought its share of challenges, including concerns about sponsorships and the overall game-day experience.

Responding to calls from the community and alumni, the Classic made a much-celebrated return to Columbus in 2024. That homecoming was not only symbolic but economically impactful—early estimates projected over $800,000 in local revenue.

Now, the Classic enters a new chapter. Tuskegee University has confirmed that the 2025 game will be played in Montgomery, Ala. at the city's Cramton Bowl Stadium. Montgomery has become increasingly central to the university’s athletic and cultural events, including the Red Tails Classic also played at Cramton Bowl and the annual Turkey Day Classic, played at Alabama State University.

While details regarding the venue and programming are still being finalized, organizers describe the move as a strategic effort to grow the Classic’s brand and fan engagement.

More Than a Game

At its core, the Tuskegee–Morehouse Classic is far more than a football game. It’s a living tribute to heritage, resilience and the enduring excellence of historically Black colleges and universities. For generations of alumni and supporters, the Classic has been an annual reunion—an opportunity to celebrate history, renew bonds and uplift community pride.

As the Classic prepares for its next era in Montgomery, fans can expect the same spirit, spectacle and pageantry that have defined this tradition for nearly a century.
