Another week of electrifying sports action has passed in the tri-city area, and the Central-Phenix City flag football team continues its reign at the top. The Red Devils extended their winning streak to an impressive 30 games this week, shutting down Pacelli High of Columbus, Ga., in a 26-0 rout. With this victory, they bring their record to 12-0, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in the league. What’s even more impressive is that this victory marks the ninth shutout for Central this season, showcasing their dominance on both sides of the ball. Currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, they are not only turning heads locally but are also making waves across the country.
The spotlight was almost national for these undefeated Red Devils, they will be featured on NFL Live today at 3:45pm on ESPN, which will undoubtedly generate even more buzz around this exceptional team. Leading Central’s standout performance was Natalyn Lumpkin, a player who embodies the spirit of the Red Devils. Lumpkin caught seven passes for 77 yards and three touchdowns, proving to be a vital asset on offense. But her contributions didn’t stop there; on defense, she had four flag pulls and even snagged an interception, demonstrating her versatility and skill.
Quarterback Gerritt Griggs also shone brightly in this game, completing 13-of-18 passes for 113 yards, scoring three touchdowns, and adding a rushing touchdown to boot. His poise and accuracy have made him a key player for the Red Devils this season. On the defensive front, Ally Supan led the charge with seven flag pulls and a crucial interception, making sure Pacelli's offense had little room to breathe. With players like Lumpkin, Griggs, and Supan leading the way, it’s no wonder Central-Phenix City has been such a formidable opponent.
Across town, Calvary Christian Middle School's football team wrapped up a flawless season by claiming the Private School Middle School Football Championship, crushing Pacelli 50-0 in a commanding performance. In a storybook season that sounds like a Hollywood script, the Knights went 9-0, surrendering only six points all season. This defensive prowess combined with their explosive offense has made them a team to watch for years to come.
Meanwhile, Russell County’s junior quarterback Bryson Riggins lit up the field in an astounding display of skill, throwing nine touchdowns on 26-of-30 attempts for a staggering 543 yards, leading the Warriors to a 78-40 victory over the Rehobeth Rebels. Riggins not only displayed exceptional arm strength and accuracy but also connected with eight different receivers throughout the game. Senior receiver Denver Harper was a standout, finishing with eight receptions for 218 yards and three touchdowns, while sophomore Quentin Lewis and junior receiver Jamari Burnett each contributed significantly, with five receptions each and combining for 176 yards and five touchdowns. Riggins’ performance is a testament to the depth of talent on this team, making them a serious contender as the playoffs approach.
In another impressive showing, the Carver Tigers continued their dominant season, steamrolling Jordan’s Red Jackets 66-6. With this win, the Tigers improve to 9-1 and secure an unblemished 6-0 record in the region. Their explosive offense and tenacious defense will undoubtedly make them a tough opponent in the playoffs. They will close out their regular season against the Kendrick Cherokees, who suffered a tough 60-0 loss against Shaw. The Cherokees are looking to bounce back but will have a challenging task ahead against a formidable Carver squad. Shaw, now 3-3 in the region, currently holds the fourth spot and is set for a Halloween face-off against Jordan at Kinnett Stadium, promising fans some spirited action.
Harris County also claimed victory, moving to 7-3 on the season with a commanding 41-0 win over Mundy’s Mill. The Tigers showcased their strength and determination, and with one game left in the regular season, they’re set to take on Creekside. This matchup will be crucial for Harris County as they look to build momentum heading into the playoffs.
