Welcome back to "Time-Out," where we celebrate the thrilling achievements and unforgettable moments that make our community's sports scene truly remarkable.

This week's edition overflows with incredible stories of commitment, victory and relentless pursuit of excellence. From triumphant commitments to breathtaking athletic performances and highly anticipated playoff pushes, we've got it all covered!

Shane Otipoby signed with Chattahoochee Valley Community College. Colton Armstrong and Seth Erickson signed to Southern Union Community college, and Holden Dean is bound for Central Alabama Community College.

Let’s kick off with a standing ovation for five exceptional Russell County High School athletes who have etched their names in the history books.

During an exhilarating Signing Day event, these stars made it official: their talents and hard work have earned them a chance to compete at the next level. Softball standout Ryleigh Howard will continue her career at Chattahoochee Valley Community College, joining baseball phenom Shane Otipoby, who also signed on with the CVCC.

Meanwhile, Colton Armstrong and Seth Erickson are taking their baseball talents to Southern Union Community College, and Holden Dean is bound for Central Alabama Community College.

Their achievements exemplify dedication, grit and passion, and their future is undoubtedly bright. Congratulations to these athletes, their families and the coaches who supported them every step of the way!

Auburn High School Girls’ Cross-Country team, crowned the 2024 Class 7A State Champions.

Shifting gears, we celebrate an outstanding performance by the Auburn High School Girls’ Cross-Country team, crowned the 2024 Class 7A State Champions at the 69th Alabama High School Athletic Association Cross-Country Championships. The team showcased resilience and strength at Oakville Indian Mounds Park, leaving their mark with a dominant performance.

Columbus High School Girls also brought home glory by capturing the Georgia High School Athletics 2A Girls State Championship, led by state champ Olivia DiQuattro, who ran with heart and determination. Teammates Alyna Gilbert and Gabby Ware clinched impressive finishes, propelling their team to the top of the podium. Well done, ladies—you have made your school and community immensely proud!

On the football field, it’s all about the Carver-Columbus Tigers, who now hold the top spot in Class 2A for the first time since 2010. The Tigers didn’t play last weekend but soared to No. 1 following an upset loss by previous leader Appling County.

Under the guidance of third-year Coach Pierre Coffey, Carver is gearing up for a deep playoff run, eager to capture their first state championship since 2007. Nov. 15, they’ll take on Therrell at Odis Spencer Stadium, with kick-off at 7:30 p.m.

In other playoff action, the Spencer Greenwaves face off against Westside, while the Shaw Raiders hit the road to take on Carver Montgomery. Harris County is set to clash with Creekside, and fans are bracing for some epic battles!

Columbus Youth Football Cheer Showcase (Russell County Cheer Squad)

Cheerleaders took center stage this week at the annual Columbus Youth Football Cheer Showcase at Columbus State University, where skill, spirit and dedication were on full display. Teams from Clubview, Phenix City, Russell County, Northeast, Eastway, River City, South Columbus and Fort Moore competed with heart. The Phenix City Titans dazzled the audience, capturing both the "Stand Battle" and "Crowd Spirit" Awards. Congratulations to all participants for bringing their best and embodying what it means to represent your teams with pride!

On the hardwood, basketball season tipped off with a bang. The Central Red Devils wasted no time making a statement, routing Shaw 100-50 and claiming an earlier 92-40 win. The Carver Tigers also flexed their muscles, beating Cambridge 75-44. Freshman guard T.J. Woodson led all scorers with 14 points, and sophomore Ace Thomas chipped in with 10. Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Tigers take on Creekside Christian at Carver at 6 p.m.—don't miss the action!

As we look ahead, excitement continues to build for the Greg Nance Bowl. Mark your calendars for December 13th, when Media Day takes place at the 5th Quarter Event Center. This highly anticipated showcase will be followed by the main event on December 14th at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

Prepare to witness some of the top players from the tri-city area as they go head-to-head and showcase their talents. Players and coaches will be selected from the local youth football league, bringing the best of the best together for an exciting competition.
