Welcome back, sports fans!
Another week of intense competition is behind us, but not without a few interruptions from Mother Nature. Hurricane Helena made her presence felt across the Tri-City area, forcing several sporting events to be postponed or canceled.
From softball to the annual Middle School Football Jamboree, and even the middle school soccer playoffs, many teams had to put their plans on hold due to the storm.
But the heart of our local athletes can't be stopped by a little rain and wind! High school football made sure the show went on, with some thrilling matchups that gave us plenty to talk about.
One team that didn’t mind playing in wet conditions was the Spencer Greenwaves, who took on Kendrick in what turned out to be a one-sided affair.
Spencer had no problem dealing with the weather or their opponent, cruising to a dominant 55-14 victory. This win lifts the Greenwaves to an impressive 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in the region.
Over the last two games, Spencer’s offense has been nothing short of explosive, scoring a whopping 111 points while their defense has only allowed 31. The Greenwaves are firing on all cylinders and now turn their attention to an even bigger challenge as they head to Sumter County to face the undefeated Panthers, who sit at 6-0.
This upcoming game promises to be a real test of Spencer’s strength — will the Greenwaves continue their offensive onslaught, or will the Panthers' defense be too much to handle?
Only time will tell, but it’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated matchups of the season.
Meanwhile, over in Harris County, the Tigers put on a defensive clinic in their 21-0 shutout victory over the Northside Patriots. Bishop Adam led the charge for Harris County with two rushing touchdowns, while Joshua Jones added another.
But the real story of the night was the Tigers’ defense. They held Northside to just 56 rushing yards, completely shutting down the Patriots’ offense and securing a statement win.
This victory improves Harris County’s standing, while Northside, now 3-2 on the season, will need to regroup quickly. Their next game is against Mundy’s Mill, and the Patriots will be looking to bounce back and get back into the win column.
The Carver Tigers also put on a show this week, continuing their dominant run with a 42-0 dismantling of the Hardaway Hawks. From the opening kickoff, which Carver returned for a touchdown, the Tigers were in complete control.
Their offense racked up over 250 total yards, while their defense was equally impressive, holding Hardaway to a mere 49 passing yards and an astonishing -15 rushing yards. With this commanding win, Carver improves to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in the region.
Carver’s strong showing has them looking like a serious contender, and they’ll look to keep their momentum rolling as the season progresses.
But that’s not all for Week 7!
Around the region, Sumter County delivered a crushing 56-0 victory over Jordan, while Brookstone dismantled Calvary 55-7. Russell County had a high-scoring affair against Valley, coming out on top 45-27, while Shaw rebounded later in the week with a 35-7 win over Columbus.
Pacelli and Strong Rock had a back-and-forth battle, with Pacelli ultimately prevailing 56-34. Beulah edged Loachapoka 28-15 in a hard-fought contest, and Stanhope Elmore shut down Smith Station 20-0.
Opelika had a tight contest with Pike Road, but pulled away to win 31-20. All in all, it was a thrilling week of action, despite some weather challenges.
Now, looking ahead to this week’s Friday Night Lights, we have another exciting slate of games coming your way.
The Northside Patriots will travel to Jonesboro to take on Mundy’s Mill, where they’ll look to bounce back from their tough loss to Harris County.
The Shaw Raiders will face off against the high-flying Carver Tigers at Kinnett Stadium, a game that promises to be full of fireworks.
Meanwhile, Kendrick will take on Jordan at Odis Spencer Stadium in what should be a fierce battle, and the Spencer Greenwaves will travel to Sumter County for their much-anticipated showdown with the undefeated Panthers.
All games are set to kick off at 7 p.m., so make sure you’re there to support your teams and witness all the action!
