Spring break may be in full swing on one side of the river, but across the bridge in Alabama, the action is live. With baseball, soccer and even a brand-new flag football league on the rise, competition is heating up, and local teams are making their mark in a big way.
The Central Red Devils kept their momentum rolling with a hard-fought 8-4 victory over Auburn on April 2. Their fourth straight road win pushed them to an impressive 22-7 record, proving once again that they can handle the pressure away from home. Their success has largely been driven by a consistent offensive attack, averaging nearly seven runs per game during this winning stretch.
Auburn, meanwhile, found contributions from multiple players, with five different batters recording a hit. Will Whatley had a standout performance, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored, while Britt Farr chipped in with a hit and a run. Despite their efforts, Auburn has hit a rough patch, dropping four of their last five games to slip to 13-12 on the season.
The rivalry continued as Central and Auburn square off again on April 3, this time with Central defending their home turf. The Red Devils, riding a six-game winning streak, beat the Tigers 10-3.
Meanwhile, Glenwood continued their dominant run, extending their own winning streak to five with a 5-0 shutout over Lee-Scott Academy. The Gators were in control from start to finish, shutting down the Warriors’ offense completely. This is becoming a familiar sight, as Glenwood has now outscored their opponents by an average of 14.5 runs during their win streak. The victory bumps Glenwood to 20-3-1, while Lee-Scott, despite an impressive 11-game winning streak before this game, now falls to 17-8.
Russell County found themselves in a nail-biter against Rehobeth but emerged with a gritty 3-1 win. It was their closest victory since March 8th and a satisfying dose of revenge after falling to the Rebels 1-0 back in 2022. Cameron Brewer led the charge at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, helping the Warriors level their record at 10-10. Rehobeth, on the other hand, saw their six-game winning streak snapped as they dropped to 13-8. But the Rebels didn't have to wait long for a rematch, as these two teams met again April 3 when Rehobeth won 5-2.

On the soccer field, Smiths Station made a statement with a dominant 6-0 victory over Brewbaker Tech on April 1. Not only did they secure a much-needed win, but they did so in style, posting their highest-scoring game of the season. The Lady Panthers had been struggling at home, dropping three straight, but this emphatic shutout showed they were ready to turn the tide. Brewbaker Tech, now sitting at 5-6-3, will need to regroup quickly. Smiths Station faced Russell County on April 2 where they fell 10-1, while Brewbaker Tech hosts Booker T. Washington Magnet April 3. Given that Booker T. Washington Magnet is mired in a brutal 10-game losing streak, this could be a prime opportunity for Brewbaker Tech to bounce back.
Glenwood’s soccer squad also had a reason to celebrate after dismantling Prattville Christian Academy with a 7-0 rout. This marks the third time this season the Gators have won by at least five goals, and their offensive firepower seems to be gaining steam. With two straight wins and 13 goals scored across those matches, Glenwood is picking up speed at the right time. Their record now stands at 4-6, while Prattville Christian Academy’s struggles continue as they fall to 3-10 with five consecutive losses.
