Staff Report

A teenager died after being shot at an apartment complex in Columbus, and a suspect has been arrested nearly two years after the incident.

On the evening of July 7, 2023, officers with the Columbus Police Department responded to the Arbor Pointe Apartments on Gazebo Way, where they found 17-year-old Bobby Lyons suffering from gunshot wounds. Lyons was rushed to Piedmont Columbus Regional by emergency medical services.

The Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation, and on July 8, Lyons succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:02 a.m. by Deputy Coroner Elizabeth Allison.

In June 2024, Aquiles Saunders was identified as a suspect in the shooting, leading to a murder warrant for his arrest.

Saunders, 22, was arrested on Mar. 14, 2025, in North Carolina by U.S. Marshals and extradited to Columbus. He has been charged with murder and was scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court on Mar. 19, 2025.

Authorities say additional arrests are expected in connection with the case.
