Angie Stone, the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and pioneer of neo-soul music, has passed away at the age of 63 from a car accident, leaving behind a rich legacy of timeless music and cultural influence.

Stone, born Angela Laverne Brown on Dec. 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, began her career in the late 1970s as a member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence. The group’s hit song, "Funk You Up," became one of the first rap records to achieve mainstream success. Stone later transitioned into R&B, gaining prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s with a series of acclaimed albums, including Black Diamond (1999), Mahogany Soul (2001), and Stone Love (2004).

Her smooth, velvety voice and heartfelt lyrics earned her widespread recognition, including three Grammy nominations.

Songs like "No More Rain (In This Cloud)" and "Brotha" became anthems of love, resilience, and empowerment. Stone’s work not only showcased her vocal ability but also her talents as a songwriter, penning hits for artists such as D’Angelo, with whom she shared both a personal and professional relationship.

Beyond music, Stone’s impact extended to acting, with roles in television and film, as well as mentoring young artists within the industry. She remained an advocate for soul music and frequently spoke about the importance of preserving its roots.

Fellow artists and fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to Stone’s contributions to music and culture.

“Her voice was a gift, and her presence was a blessing,” said longtime collaborator Jill Scott in a statement.

Stone’s family has requested privacy during this time and will announce memorial service details in the coming days.
