A shooting on Jan. 14, 2025, in the 2000 block of Wynnton Road has been ruled as an act of self-defense following an investigation by the Columbus Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit.
Officers responding to the scene at 4:31 p.m. found Cory Bell, 48, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Bell was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional where he was listed in stable condition.
The investigation revealed that the incident occurred inside an apartment at the location. Police found evidence of the altercation, including two shell casings and a shattered glass end table. Officers determined that Bell had assaulted a female by striking her and knocking her through the glass table. Bell then turned his aggression toward a male inside the apartment, who is physically handicapped.
The male involved in the shooting acted in self-defense and in defense of the female, police said. Based on the evidence, the case was closed, and the shooting was ruled justified.
Warrants were issued for Bell on several charges, including exploitation and intimidation of disabled adults or elderly persons, two counts of battery, and criminal trespass.
Bell was arrested on Jan. 24, 2025, and taken to the Muscogee County Jail. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Recorder’s Court on at 8 a.m. on Jan. 29, 2025.
