Pasaquan, the visionary art environment founded by folk artist St. EOM, will host a free concert on March 22 celebrating the connection between music and art. The event, titled Keepin’ the Song, will feature Georgia-based post-punk and garage rock bands Pylon Reenactment Society, Subsonics, W8ING4UFOs, and Token Hearts.
The concert is made possible by a Georgia Council for the Arts Vibrant Communities Grant, which supports arts access in rural communities.
“Keepin’ the Song will celebrate the intersection of music with the wondrous artistic creations of our beloved Southern saint and Pasaquan founder, Eddie Owens Martin,” said Annie Moye, chair of the Pasaquan Preservation Society. “We are especially pleased to present Georgia rock bands with strong female presences.”
Eddie Owens Martin—better known as St. EOM—was known for blending visual art with music, often leading improvised music sessions at Pasaquan and incorporating rhythm and song into his philosophy.
“St. EOM even spoke of his philosophy at times in musical terms,” said Pasaquan Director Mike McFalls, a faculty member at Columbus State University. “He would say: ‘Keep kindness in your heart, and go on along, keepin’ the rhythm and keepin’ the song.’ It seemed only fitting we’d borrow from that philosophy when naming this concert.”
Pasaquan has hosted numerous artists over the years, including visits from R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe and performances by Col. Bruce Hampton and Jake Fussell. The Tedeschi Trucks Band also paid tribute to the site with their song Pasaquan on the 2022 album I Am the Moon I: Crescent.
Performances will begin at 3 p.m. on March 22. Admission is free, with donations accepted to support Pasaquan’s preservation and programming.
Pylon Reenactment Society will headline the event. Led by original Pylon frontwoman Vanessa Briscoe Hay, PRS continues the legacy of the influential Athens, Georgia, dance-punk band. Their debut album, Magnet Factory, received an 8/10 rating from Uncut Magazine, which praised its mix of “angular noise-pop and nervy punk-funk.”
Other featured bands include:
Established in the 1950s by St. EOM, Pasaquan is an internationally recognized visionary art site spanning seven acres in Buena Vista. Featuring six elaborately decorated buildings, painted concrete walls, sculptures and thousands of artistic artifacts, Pasaquan is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Columbus State University assumed ownership of the site in 2014 and continues to oversee its preservation in partnership with the Pasaquan Preservation Society.
