Central Red Devils Make Noise in Tennessee Classic

The Tri-City area closed out 2024 with a bang, showcasing athletic talent across a range of sports and cementing its status as a powerhouse region. From basketball showdowns to wrestling triumphs, here’s a deep dive into the week’s highlights and achievements that have defined this vibrant sports community.

The Central Red Devils basketball team traveled to Tennessee for the prestigious Classic Tennessee Tournament and delivered an impressive run. After a thrilling 69-63 victory over No. 38 nationally ranked Milton, they punched their ticket to the championship game. This was no small feat, as the tournament featured some of the country’s elite programs, including St. Joseph (No. 3 in California, No. 9 nationally) and Calvary Prep (No. 2 in Florida, No. 19 nationally).

In the final, Central faced off against undefeated No. 19 Calvary Christian Academy. Despite their best efforts and a strong showing, the Red Devils fell 74-63 in a hard-fought game. Their performance in the tournament, however, underscored their ability to compete at the highest level.

The Carver Tigers basketball team showed their grit and determination in the Lemon Street Classic. They edged out Etowah in a 53-52 nail-biter, improving their season record to 8-1. Senior Tony Montgomery was the star of the show, scoring 22 points, dishing out eight assists, and grabbing four steals. Tobiaz Tolbert stood tall on defense with 9 rebounds and six blocks. However, their next game against New Manchester ended in heartbreak, as they narrowly lost 63-62. Despite the setback, the Tigers’ season remains full of promise, with standout performances building momentum for the months ahead.

St. Anne-Pacelli Vikings continue their basketball dominance, extending their record to 11-0.

Over at St. Anne-Pacelli, the Vikings continue to dominate on the court. Their latest win, a 63-46 triumph over East Paulding, extended their flawless record to 11-0. Senior Jalien Bush led the charge with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and five assists, while sophomore Michael Rowe impressed with a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. Looking ahead, the Vikings face their biggest test yet against the formidable 16-1 Dothan Wolves on January 3rd. Fans eagerly await this marquee matchup.

Chattahoochee County’s Champ Simpson continues to dazzle, proving to be a clutch performer. Fresh off a 30-point game, Simpson delivered a game-winning shot to secure a 58-56 victory over Glenwood in the Border Wars Tournament. His 24 points and 9 rebounds were instrumental in lifting the Panthers to a 7-5 season record.

Columbus High varsity wrestling team traveled to West Laurens and wrestled at The Raider Invitational.

Moving over to the mat, the Columbus High Blue Devils wrestling team brought home gold at the Raider Invitational in West Laurens. Junior Ethan Secoy was named Most Outstanding Wrestler, a testament to his exceptional performance throughout the tournament. The team had several individual champions, including Anthony Gaines-Shavers, Cedric Montgomery, and Mason Persons, showcasing their depth and skill.

Carver Tigers’ Jamaal Brinkley was named Georgia Class 2A Parker Resources Assistant Coaches of the Year.

The spotlight isn’t just on athletes—it’s also on the coaches who guide them. Carver Tigers’ Jamaal Brinkley and Spencer Greenwave’s Detrich Wadley and Fred Wilson were honored as Georgia Class 2A Parker Resources Assistant Coaches of the Year. Russell County’s Dillon Griggs earned the title of 6A Region 2 Co-Coach of the Year, further highlighting the leadership excellence in the Tri-City area.

As we reflect on 2024, the Tri-City area has much to celebrate. Central and Pacelli’s flag football teams earned national rankings and state titles, with Central claiming the No. 1 spot. Carver Tigers football secured their first championship since 2007, and the Columbus Lions achieved back-to-back arena football titles. Wrestling programs, baseball teams, and basketball squads all left their mark with stellar performances and trophies.

The legendary Tuskegee vs. Morehouse Classic returned to A.J. McClung Stadium, adding another layer of excitement to the sports calendar. Fans witnessed Tuskegee’s Golden Tigers dominate with a commanding 42-0 victory. Looking ahead to 2025, the excitement in Tri-City sports is far from over. With basketball seasons in full swing, wrestling teams poised for more wins, and spring sports just around the corner, the community can expect another year of unforgettable moments.
