The Columbus NAACP Chapter gathered with the community last Saturday morning for their Civic Engagement Summit. During the event residents got the opportunity to hear from 2024 election candidates and gain knowledge for voter registration resources. Among those speaking was Director of Elections and Registration, Nancy Boren and Political Director, Dominick Perkins.
Some topics discussed included instructions for online and in-person voter registration, voting poll locations and obtaining access to polling locations for residents without transportation. Seeing the monumental outcome of events such as Souls to the Polls have yielded in previous years, there may be more put in place to encourage residents to get informed and vote.
Residents also heard from DeAsia Delma and Kendall Williams, who gave their perspectives on the importance of younger generations voting and gaining knowledge about the political figures within their community. They each shared their personal experiences of getting involved in youth groups as children in Columbus and how that has shaped them into who they are now. They both currently still participate with youth groups such as My Black Has a Purpose, and encourage others to get involved in the community as well.
