In an exciting shift for our local government, three distinguished individuals take roles in key positions within the city administration. This change is a testament to their exceptional skills, dedication, and unwavering commitment to serving our community.
Meet the Appointees:
David Britt: The new Tax Commissioner of Muscogee County.
With more than two decades of experience serving in the Tax Commissioner’s Office, Britt brings a deep commitment to public service and a broad range of expertise to his new role.
“I am grateful to serve as Muscogee County’s next Tax Commissioner. I thank God for His guidance and wisdom. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity,” Britt said.
Over his 23-year tenure, Britt has built a reputation for his dedication to serving the public, leveraging his extensive educational background with advanced degrees in communications, business administration, and public administration, alongside experience in real estate and mass communication.
Britt emphasized that while his credentials are notable, it is his passion for service and his ability to connect with people that he believes are his greatest assets.
“I believe in leading by example, meeting people where they are, and working together to find solutions,” he said.
Britt succeeds current Tax Commissioner Lula L. Huff, whose leadership has been recognized for its dedication and impact.
“Our current Tax Commissioner, Lula L. Huff, has laid an outstanding foundation. She has served, sacrificed and worked tirelessly for the citizens of Muscogee County. The office is better because of her leadership,” Britt noted, highlighting his intent to build on her legacy.
Attorney Jennifer Dunlap
Jennifer Dunlap was recently appointed as Judge Pro Tempore of Recorders Court. Dunlap is a Partner at Dunlap & Lakes, P.C. and head of the Injury/Insurance Section and the Gaming Law Section. She specializes in representing clients who were injured because of the negligence of others; and in representing clients in arbitrations and hearings before the Georgia Lottery Corporation.
Dunlap serves as the leader of A Second Chance Criminal Record Relief, Inc., a Georgia non-profit she founded in 2017 to address criminal record issues holding our community members back from better jobs and better housing. She also serves on the boards of Direct Services Inc. and on the State Disciplinary Board for the Georgia State Bar.
Shevon Sutcliffe Thomas Democrat Shevon Thomas won the Solicitor General race in Muscogee County against Republican incumbent Suzanne Goddard, who served in the position for the past 10 years.
Thomas, a private attorney, established his own law firm in 2006 and represented criminal defense and personal injury services to the Columbus area, according to his law firm’s website, Shevon Sutcliffe Thomas & Associates.
He also previously served as Assistant Solicitor General in Coweta County in Georgia.
"It's time for new leadership," Thomas said. "I'm not one to make promises I know I can't fulfill. I do have a plan, and I am ready to bring some new ideas to the table."
The election of David Britt and Shevon Thomas, along with the appointment of Jennifer Dunlap marks a new chapter of progressive leadership and innovation for our city. City officials and residents alike feel confident that these new leaders will inspire positive change, bringing fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to their respective roles.
