Morehouse School of Medicine celebrated a milestone Wednesday with the ribbon-cutting of the Calvin Smyre Educational Conference Center, marking a significant moment in the institution's history.
Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, President and CEO of Morehouse School of Medicine, emphasized the center's transformative potential. "This is not just a building, this is a legacy," Rice declared. "This is about creating spaces where innovation happens, where collaboration occurs, and where we can continue to advance health equity."
Calvin Smyre, the honored namesake, was visibly moved during the ceremony, highlighting the center's deeper significance. "Education is the key to all keys to being a more productive citizen in a challenging society," Smyre said.
Rice further underscored the center's importance, noting its role in advancing medical education and research. "This conference center will be a hub of learning, discovery, and transformation," she stated.
The new facility represents an investment in intellectual capital and future generations of medical professionals. Smyre reflected on his role in creating opportunities, particularly for African American students pursuing careers in medicine.
"To see these students becoming future doctors is a great opportunity," Smyre noted, highlighting the center's potential to inspire emerging medical professionals.
The conference center stands as a testament to Smyre's decades-long commitment to education and community development, providing a space for learning, collaboration, and future medical leaders to grow.
Dr. Montgomery Rice concluded by emphasizing the center's broader impact: "This is about creating pathways, breaking barriers, and continuing the legacy of excellence at Morehouse School of Medicine."
The dedication ceremony celebrated not just a new building, but a continued commitment to educational excellence, innovation, and opportunity in medical education.
