Authorities have arrested Luigi Mangione in connection to the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel last week.
Mangione, 43, was taken into custody early Monday morning following an intensive manhunt that involved both the NYPD and the FBI. Thompson, 50, was shot multiple times outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel on Dec. 4, where he was scheduled to attend an investors' conference.
Investigators described the attack as “targeted,” with the assailant lying in wait near the hotel entrance. Surveillance footage captured the suspect fleeing the scene on a bicycle moments after the shooting. The investigation gained momentum over the weekend with the release of images of a male suspect, which led to public tips identifying Mangione.
“We are confident that we have the right suspect,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a press conference Monday, noting that Mangione’s apprehension came after evidence linked him to the crime scene.
Thompson’s murder shocked the business and healthcare communities. As the CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, he was a prominent figure in the insurance industry. UnitedHealth Group, the parent company, called Thompson a “respected leader” and extended condolences to his family.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but police are continuing to investigate possible connections to Thompson’s recent public-facing business decisions. Mangione faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder.
Thompson, who is survived by his wife and two sons, was remembered as a devoted family man and accomplished professional. A memorial service is planned later this week in his home state of Minnesota.
