Arrest Made in Deadly Hit-and-Run Incident
The Columbus Police Department’s Motor Squad has made an arrest in the hit-and-run investigation that claimed the life of
Columbus, GA - The Muscogee County School District mourns the tragic loss of one of our students, Earkavion Lee, a 9th-grade student at Kendrick High School, as a result of senseless gun violence.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire school community during this incredibly difficult time.
The safety and well-being of our students are always our top priorities. We are confident that the Columbus Police Department will continue its thorough investigation into this matter, and we ask for respect and privacy for the family at this time.
This loss will undoubtedly raise a range of emotions, concerns, and questions within our school community, particularly among our students.
To provide support, the Muscogee County School District’s Crisis Intervention Team, comprised of trained professionals, will be available to address the emotional needs of students, parents, and staff during this difficult time. School counselors are also available to assist and counsel anyone in need.
On Sept. 19, 2024, at 4:27 p.m., Columbus Police officers responded to the 2300 block of Watkins Drive in reference to a shooting.
Upon arrival, they discovered a Black male, who was later identified as Earkavion Lee, 15, suffering from a gunshot wound in the street.
EMS arrived and transported Lee to the Piedmont Columbus Regional where he succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced deceased at 5:15 p.m.
Roannil Clanton has been arrested and charged with murder in the shooting
that claimed the life of Lee. He also will be charged with six counts of aggravated assault.
Clanton is scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024.
He was arrested with the assistance of multiple agencies to include CPD, the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
The Violent Crimes Unit was called to the scene to take lead on the investigation.
