The Columbus, Ga., and Phenix City, Ala., region has long been a fertile ground for producing top football talent.

As the 2024 season approaches, several homegrown stars from these areas are making their mark at some of the most prestigious college football programs in the Southeast.

From the storied traditions of Alabama and Georgia to rising powerhouses like Auburn and Troy, these athletes are poised to play pivotal roles for their respective teams.

Here's a look at the standout players who continue to carry the torch for their hometowns on the collegiate gridiron.

Homegrown Heroes Continue to Shine for Regional Football Powerhouses Alabama Crimson Tide: #16 Red Morgan, Phenix City, Ala. (Central High School) - Freshman: A highly touted 4-star safety, Red Morgan was a prized recruit, choosing Alabama over Florida State. Known for his explosive hitting power and impeccable tackling technique, Morgan is expected to play a significant role in the Tide's defense, especially following the departure of All-Star Caleb Downs to Ohio State. The future looks bright for this promising freshman.

#57 Elijah Pritchett, Columbus, Ga. (Carver High School) - Sophomore: Standing tall at 6'6" and weighing 327 pounds, Elijah Pritchett is a formidable presence on Alabama’s offensive line. With 13 games under his belt, Pritchett is poised for an expanded role in 2024. His size and durability make him a key asset for the Crimson Tide, particularly as they push towards another postseason run.

#88 Isaia Faga, Phenix City, Ala. (Central High School) - Freshman: Isaia Faga brings a blend of speed and power to Alabama's defense. As a 4-star recruit, he was a solid pickup for the Tide, having been coached by former Auburn quarterback Patrick Nix at Central High. Faga’s versatility and athleticism are expected to earn him significant playing time as he develops under Alabama’s system.

Georgia Bulldogs: #13 Mykel Williams, Columbus, Ga. (Hardaway High School) - Junior: Mykel Williams, a former Maxwell Football National High School Defensive Player of the Year, has already made his mark at Georgia. A National Champion in 2022, Williams is a dominant force on the Bulldogs' defense. His exceptional field vision, relentless energy, and elite physical tools make him a potential top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

#28 Walter Blanchard, Columbus, Ga. (Brookstone School) - Redshirt Freshman: After redshirting in 2023, Walter Blanchard is looking to make his mark at Georgia. Though currently listed as a fourth-string Y-receiver, Blanchard's role could increase, especially with the new 12-team playoff format potentially stretching Georgia's receiving corps.

Auburn Tigers: #8 Cam Coleman, Phenix City, Ala. (Central High School) - Freshman: Cam Coleman, a 5-star recruit and top-ranked wide receiver prospect, has Auburn fans excited. Known for his speed, strength, and ability to make tough catches, Coleman was named MVP of Auburn's A-Day game, recording four receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown. He’s expected to be a key player for the Tigers in 2024.

#45 Darron Reed Jr., Columbus, Ga. (Carver High School) - Freshman: Darron Reed Jr. saw limited action in the Music City Bowl but is eager for more in 2024. The Carver High standout had an impressive senior year with 8 sacks and 33 tackles. Reed is currently majoring in Business and looks to be a rising star in Auburn’s defense.

#89 Dylan Gentry, Phenix City, Ala. (Central High School) - Freshman: Dylan Gentry is known for his work ethic and consistency. As a senior at Central High, he recorded 29 receptions for 540 yards and 7 touchdowns. Gentry could play a pivotal role for Auburn in 2024 as a reliable contributor on offense.

Troy Trojans: #0 Gerald Green, Columbus, Ga. (East Coweta High School) - Senior: Gerald Green, a powerful running back, has had stints at East Carolina and Georgia Southern before landing at Troy. With a season-high 53 yards on three carries against UTSA, Green is part of a deep running back committee at Troy, alongside talents like Damien Taylor, Jarris Williams, and former Alabama Mr. Football Tae Maedows.

#83 D.J. Epps, Seale, Ala. (Russell County High School) - Sophomore: After a quiet freshman year, D.J. Epps is looking to make an impact at Troy. The 6'1" slot receiver showed promise in recent scrimmages, making several key catches. His instincts and speed could lead to increased playing time in 2024.

Georgia State University: #8 Ja’Cyais Credle, Columbus, Ga. (Carver High School) - Senior: Ja'Cyais Credle, a 6'4" redshirt senior, was Georgia State's second-leading receiver in 2022. In 2023, he continued to be a reliable target, recording 14 receptions for 142 yards. Credle’s versatility, including his ability to pass effectively, makes him a key component of the Panthers’ offense.

#10 D.J. Riles, Columbus, Ga. (Carver High School) - Sophomore: D.J. Riles, a former wide receiver turned dual-threat quarterback, transferred to Georgia State from Middle Tennessee State. In 2023, Riles saw action in 12 games, contributing both as a rusher and receiver. His adaptability will be an asset for the Panthers in 2024.

#46 Ian Mathews, Columbus, Ga. (St. Ann-Pacelli Catholic) - Junior: Ian Mathews, a powerful defensive end, transferred to Georgia State from Hutchinson Community College. In 2023, Mathews tallied 16 tackles, two sacks, and four tackles for loss. His size and potential suggest he could play a more significant role for the Panthers in 2024.

#68 Mason Cook, Columbus, Ga. (Central High School) - Junior: Mason Cook, a versatile lineman, had a strong 2023 season, playing in all 12 games and making four starts. His proficiency at both tackle and guard positions, coupled with his recognition on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, makes him a reliable presence on Georgia State's offensive line.

Alabama State University: #1 Desheen Jackson, Columbus, Ga. (Carver High School) - Junior: Desheen Jackson, a transfer from Troy University and Hutchinson Community College, is expected to bolster Alabama State's secondary in 2024. Ranked as the #10 prep safety in the country by On3, Jackson brings experience and skill to the Hornets' defense.

Valdosta State University: Ameir Bellamy, Phenix City, Ala. (Central High School) - Redshirt Freshman: After redshirting in 2023, Ameir Bellamy is ready to step up in 2024. The 6'1", 282-pound offensive lineman has shown versatility, capable of playing both on the line and at fullback.

Bellamy’s consistency will be crucial as he looks to earn more reps for the Blazers.
