Hidden in Plain Sight: How to Spot and Stop Human Trafficking

Janell Williams

Human trafficking is a growing concern in Georgia, especially for children and vulnerable adults who are high risk for exploitation. That's why advocacy groups, such as Micah’s Promise, are working to raise awareness about the warning signs of trafficking and how communities can take action.

According to data compiled by Georgia Cares, the average age of trafficking victims in the state is 14, and many are recruited through online platforms, peer influence or coercion. Traffickers often use manipulation, violence and false promises to lure victims into dangerous situations.

They often seek out children from troubled homes or who have little to no supervision.

How Victims Are Targeted

Traffickers exploit vulnerability and seek to isolate victims by fulfilling unmet needs. According to experts, common recruitment methods include:

  • Social media and online platforms – Predators use chat rooms, video games, and social networks to groom victims.
  • False job opportunities – Traffickers advertise fake modeling or acting gigs.
  • Peer recruitment – Friends or acquaintances lure others into exploitation.
  • Familial trafficking – Some victims are sold by relatives in exchange for money, rent or drugs.

Warning Signs of Trafficking

Advocates urge community members to be vigilant for the following red flags, especially in young people:

  • Physical abuse – Unexplained bruises, burns or scars
  • Behavioral changes – Withdrawn, anxious or suddenly secretive
  • Unexplained absences from school – Frequent truancy or dropping out
  • Expensive gifts or new possessions – Unusual access to money, designer clothing or accessories
  • Older or controlling partners – Significant age gaps in relationships
  • New tattoos or branding – Symbols or initials that may indicate ownership by a trafficker
  • Increased use of social media – Sharing personal information or engaging with significantly older individuals online
