Down Syndrome Association Renames And Broadens Impact On Community

The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Columbus, formerly known as The Chattahoochee Valley Down Syndrome Association, is improving its efforts to provide resources and support to families in the Columbus area.

Vice President Christian Hill and board member Toya Barnes explained during a recent Sunday Conversation the organization's rebranding and its mission to spread awareness of Down syndrome and assist those in need.

The association, initially started by a group of dedicated mothers, rebranded in March to better serve the community.

According to Hill, the new name aims to improve outreach efforts and acknowledge individuals who are double-diagnosed with Down syndrome and
autism.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition where a person has an extra copy of a chromosome. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one in every 640 babies in the United States is born with Down Syndrome.

There are three types of Down syndrome: Trisomy 21, Translocation, and Mosaicism.

Trisomy 21 is the most common type, accounting for 95 percent of all cases.

On Oct. 5, the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Columbus will host its annual "Buddy Walk," a nationally recognized fundraising event welcoming the whole community to come out and celebrate.

The event, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lindsey Mock Pavilion and Intramural Field at Columbus State University, will feature various activities,
including a gaming truck, magic shows, face painting and food trucks.

The Buddy Walk is one of the association's most significant fundraising events, helping families receive the resources they need.
