Don't Let Them Catch You Sleeping: Stay Woke

During President Donald J. Trumps’ first term in office, he got off to a slow start. It seemed he didn’t expect to win, and he had no idea who he wanted to fill his cabinet. On top of that, he didn’t have a full understanding of the power of the presidency.

This time is different. This time he’s betting that he can sign so many executive orders that we won’t be able to keep up and before we know it our entire democracy will have changed during the course of four years. Government moves slow, but Executive Orders are instant.

Having worked in state government for 10 years, I know firsthand how few everyday citizens visit their state houses, log in to watch their state legislature in action, or keep up with the far-reaching bills that are being passed every year until after the fat lady already has sung on the issue.

Already, with the stroke of a pen Trump has halted birthright citizenship, even though Trumps own father, Fred Trump III, was a birthright citizen, having been born in 1905 to immigrant parents from Germany.

For the next 1,458 days (four years, minus two days), it’s going to be more important than ever that we as Americans education ourselves on how our government works.

Not only do we need to watch what Trump and his cabinet are doing, but we also need to watch what the Georgia Assembly and the Alabama Legislature are doing before Project 2025 slaps us across the face.

The Courier Echo Latino can’t possibly keep you informed on all the latest developments. However, we don't have to. There are other news sites that can. Throughout each day, I constantly read several newspapers and news websites. As a lifelong journalist and public relations practitioner, I like knowing what’s going on in the world and I respect good journalism.

Newspapers such as ajc.com and al.com provide excellent coverage of Georgia and Alabama state news, while apnews.com provides a great overview of national news. These free and open websites provide good information at a time when the very freedom of the press is being challenged.

Below, are a few articles about what Trump has done in only two days on the job:
