Congressman Sanford D. Bishop Jr. gathered numerous organizations and community members on Wednesday, Sept. 4, to discuss his plans for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in November.

Bishop, who represents Georgia's 2nd Congressional District, highlighted his legislative achievements and outlined his vision for the future.

With a focus on key issues such as veterans' affairs, agriculture and rural development, Bishop emphasized his commitment to continued service in Congress.

“My commitment was to use the legislative process to improve people's lives, create jobs for a strong economy, have better education, safe communities, a clean environment, affordable, accessible healthcare, strong national defense, and to try to have a kind of life that people would have the best to be able to realize their full potential,” Bishop said. “By making those resources available, we have brought billions of dollars to this congressional district and across this country to do the things that take care of the needs of the people of this country.”

During the event, Bishop expressed gratitude to his constituents for their support over the years and reaffirmed his dedication to advocating for economic growth, healthcare access and educational improvements. The press conference marks the start of his 17th campaign, having first been elected to this seat in 1992, making him one of the longest-serving members in Congress.

Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. is the Ranking Member of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee.

In addition, he serves on the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee and on the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Subcommittee.

He is also a member of the House Agriculture Committee.

“Thank you for allowing me to serve. I ask you to join me to make sure that we can continue to move this country forward and not have our democracy destroyed,” Bishop said. “We need to have a country and a government that works for the people. We're fired up and we're ready to go!”

Bishop graduated with his bachelors from Morehouse College in 1968 and with his law degree from Emory University Law School in 1971. In addition to these degrees, Morehouse awarded Bishop an honorary doctor of laws in 2010.
