Community leaders held a press conference ahead of Tuesday's Columbus City Council meeting, urging Mayor Skip Henderson to support an investigation into John Anker’s recent appointment to the District 9 Council seat. Speakers included representatives from the NAACP, local clergy, and other community activists.
Leaders will also push for a recall of the vote, citing concerns over transparency and potential violations of the Georgia Open Meetings Act.
"This was like deja vu watching that whole thing play out in front of me, but it was one of the reasons why I decided to consistently attend these city council meetings," Simi Barnes said. "When people in power don't want to hear your voice or don't want to hear representative voices, it's a sure sign that you need to be in the room."
Anker was appointed to the vacant District 9 seat following the resignation of Councilwoman Judy Thomas. The appointment process has been criticized by activists and community members who claim it lacked proper public notice and input. The Columbus NAACP and Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance have voiced concerns about whether city officials violated state laws requiring open government proceedings.
Mayor Henderson and City Council members have not yet publicly responded to the calls for an investigation. The council meeting, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 25, 2025, is expected to draw a large turnout of concerned residents. Community leaders are encouraging residents to attend and voice their concerns.
"Make your voice your presence, no matter your race or background," said Rev. Johnny Flakes. "Let us not be divided. Let us not be separated. Let us come together."
The controversy surrounding Anker’s appointment continues to grow, with local leaders vowing to push for transparency and accountability. Residents are urged to stay engaged and attend the City Council meeting to ensure their voices are heard.
