Columbus State Launches Fundraising Campaign in Honor of Mascot’s 55th Birthday

Staff Report

Columbus State University is inviting alumni, friends and community members to “give five” as part of its annual 24-hour virtual fundraising campaign, CSU Gives, set for April 8. The initiative aims to support 15 student-focused projects while celebrating the 55th birthday of the university’s mascot, Cody the Cougar.

The campaign seeks donations from at least 550 donors, a goal that coincides with Cody’s milestone year. Contributions of $5 or more will support scholarships, student-athlete recruitment, a student health fund and career development resources.

“Cody has his special birthday wish list of 15 ways you can celebrate his birthday and help Columbus State students succeed,” said Aryah Buckman, assistant director of annual giving. “Pick a favorite to support or give a little to several—the choice is yours.”

Early donations can be made at columbusstate.edu/csugives2025, where donors can track real-time progress for each project. The CSU Alumni Association will provide updates and issue special giving challenges on Facebook and Instagram throughout the day.

Last year’s campaign surpassed its goal of 540 donors, with 556 contributors raising a record-breaking $208,000—more than triple any previous one-day giving effort.

Community Celebration Set for April 9

The fundraising drive will conclude with a birthday celebration for Cody on April 9 during Columbus State’s softball doubleheader against Fort Valley State University. The event, held at Cougar Field, will begin at 5 p.m. between the two games, which are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The celebration will include photo opportunities with Cody and Miss CSU Valeria Saer, free treats, inflatables and concessions. Fans are encouraged to wear red to show their support for the team.

Admission to both the softball games and the birthday celebration is free and open to the public.
