The Columbus Police Department has unveiled the Heritage Center, a new exhibit inside the Public Safety Building that celebrates the department’s history and its longstanding connection to the community.
The Heritage Center features artifacts such as photos, uniforms and equipment, taking visitors on a journey through time. The exhibit highlights key milestones in the department's evolution, beginning in 1894 with the city's first police chief.
It also honors officers who made the ultimate sacrifice and provides insight into the dedication of those who have served Columbus over the years.
"This center is a labor of love and a testament to the vision of countless employees, both past and present, who dreamed of a space to preserve our history," said Chief Stoney Mathis. "We are thrilled to see those dreams become a reality and to offer a place where our story can inspire generations to come."
Special recognition was given to Cindy Ware, whose efforts were instrumental in bringing the Heritage Center to life. The center showcases over 13 decades of history, preserving the department’s proud legacy for future generations.
The project was made possible by the support of current and former employees, descendants and community members, whose contributions enriched the exhibits.
The department aims to expand the collection, continuing to tell the evolving story of policing in Columbus.
Small groups and organizations interested in touring the Heritage Center or contributing to its exhibits can contact the Columbus Police Department at 706-580-6423 or via email at cpdga@columbusga.org.
