Williams, 20, began his football journey on local fields before becoming a dominant force at Hardaway High School. Born in Warm Springs and raised in Columbus, he quickly rose through the ranks with a rare combination of size, strength, and skill. He earned national acclaim as the Maxwell Football National High School Defensive Player of the Year and was widely considered one of the top defensive line prospects in the country.
Hardaway High School Athletic Director Kendall Mills praised the young athlete's character and dedication.
“Mykel is a hard worker and a really good kid,” Mills said. “He deserves this opportunity, and I know his work ethic will make him an asset to the San Francisco 49ers.”
Williams’ dominance didn’t stop at the high school level. After fielding offers from top collegiate programs nationwide, he committed to the University of Georgia, where he made an immediate impact. As a freshman in 2022, he helped the Bulldogs secure a national championship. Over three seasons, he tallied 67 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, and 14 sacks, earning Freshman All-American honors and consecutive Second-Team All-SEC selections in 2023 and 2024.
At 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Williams brings power, versatility, and football intelligence to the 49ers’ defense. His ability to play across the defensive front adds depth to an already formidable unit.
Michael Woolridge, Williams’ former coach at Hardaway, expressed pride in the young man’s journey.
“Michael’s going to do well,” Woolridge said. “He’s an exceptional hard worker, comes from a great family, and he hasn’t even reached his full potential. He played through a high ankle sprain this season and still gave everything he had. When he’s fully healthy, the league better watch out.”
Williams isn't the only rising star in his family. His younger sister, Mikayla Johnson, made history this year by leading the Hardaway Lady Hawks to their first-ever GHSA Class 2A State Championship in basketball.
Together, the siblings have brought a wave of pride and celebration to Hardaway High and the broader Columbus community.
As Mykel Williams prepares to begin his NFL career, he carries the hopes and admiration of his hometown. His path from Columbus to San Francisco is a testament to resilience, talent, and the power of community support.
