BIRMINGHAM – In a dominant display of skill and strategy, the Central High School Varsity Girls Flag Football team etched their names in history on Wednesday, December 4th, capturing its second AHSAA 6A-7A State Championship with a resounding 55-7 victory over Spain Park High School at Protective Stadium in The Magic City of Birmingham.
The undefeated Red Devils (19-0) had recently garnered national attention, appearing on ESPN. Their offensive prowess was on full display, as they amassed 283 passing yards and 54 rushing yards.
And according to Bama Buzz: "Central High School - Phenix City was named the top-ranked flag football team in the country earlier this season and now, it has another state title to its name. The Red Devils dominate Spain Park to claim the 6A/7A championship."
Quarterback Gerritt Griggs orchestrated the offensive symphony, completing 14 of 19 passes for 253 yards and six touchdowns, while also rushing for an additional score. Wide receiver Natalyn Lumpkin was a key contributor, hauling in three receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
However, it was the Red Devil defense that truly stole the show. Led by the interception prowess of Colby Cook, who snagged three passes, Central's defense was impenetrable. Mariah Harrison and Summer Gilley also added interceptions to the defensive tally.
This victory extended Central's winning streak to an impressive 37 games, with each win marked by a 20-point or greater margin of victory.
Spain Park's seven-game winning streak was halted, leaving their record at 16-5-1 for the season.
Lumpkin's 34 total touchdowns led the team, while Ally Supan's 5.5 tackles per game anchored the defense. Cook's remarkable 13 interceptions solidified her status as a defensive force.
As the Red Devils celebrate their historic championship, their dominance on the field and their unwavering dedication to the sport have cemented their legacy as one of the most formidable teams in the state.
Social media exploded after the with with comments on Facebook congratulating the girls who were watched by thousands in the stands.
"Congratulations! So proud of each of you!," wrote Gerri Edwards on Facebook.
