1. What inspired you to start Columbus Karate Academy International aka CKA International, and how does your personal philosophy influence the mission and activities of the organization?
This academy was inspired by the CKA Kuwait School that I headed in the Middle East for 14 years. My personal philosophy is influenced by our Vision, that is to Believe, Overcome and Practice that influences the organization.
2.Can you share a specific moment or experience that solidified your decision to launch the International Academy?
My Wife and business partner Sensei Meron T. Zerefu is from the country of Ethiopia and after experiencing the response from communities outside of the country, we felt it was only right to bring this world experience to my hometown, motivated to bring in a new era for the martial arts.
3. Can you share some of your background and experiences in karate that led you to establish an academy focused on martial arts training and personal development?
I served in the US Marines and personal body security for several years. I now serve as the Director of the State of Georgia in Saizen GOJU RYU International Martial Arts Association with President Grandmaster Humphrey Gomes. I have completed my skills in the martial arts in the world market achieving many winnings and trained with some of the Best Martial Artists in the world.
4. What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in running a karate academy focused on martial arts education and community building?
The biggest challenge is getting the word out that I am back home!!! People know my reputation and is one that is a pillar in our community.
5. How have you overcome these obstacles, both personally and professionally, in your journey as a Karate Grand Master and a business owner?
I have overcome these obstacles by getting involved!!! I am everywhere, anyone who invites me receives the gift of the Martial Arts at its best.
6. What are your future goals for Columbus Karate Academy International, and how do you plan to continue its growth and impact?
I plan to establish a Martial Arts Network in the area that will make an impact on our youth as an alternative to violence and a way to express through art!!!
7. What impact has Columbus Karate Academy International had on the community, and how can the community and potential volunteers get involved and support your mission?
The impact is life-changing!!! To get involved is to show up and help. The community and potential volunteers can get involved and support our mission through sponsorship, scholarships and referrals. Lastly, send youth and adults our way and we will do the rest. The community is always welcome to support with their presence.
