The Mildred Terry Library, located at 640 Veterans Parkway, will host its 3rd Annual Loc Jubilee this Saturday, July 20th, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. This celebration of community and the natural beauty of locs is a must-attend event for all ages.
Alexandria Williams, a librarian and one of the founders of the Jubilee, shared how the idea for the event was inspired by the Naturally Me event previously held at the library. The Naturally Me event offered a safe space for discussions on natural hair, and Alexandria saw a need for a supportive environment in the loc community. She created a space where individuals could share their experiences and learn about locs. Thus, the Loc Jubilee was born.
"Loc Jubilee is a place where people can learn more about locs and celebrate their journey," Alex said. From tutorials on loc care to networking opportunities, the event offers something for everyone, whether you're newly loc’d or have had locs for years.
Visitors can expect a variety of vendors offering health, beauty, and unique handmade products related to locs, such as jewelry and hair care products. The Courier Eco Latino will be one of the vendors at the Jubilee, offering family-friendly games, giveaways, and prizes for all ages. There will also be discussions on locs' cultural significance, history, and what they mean to the community.
According to Alexandria, one of the goals of the Loc Jubilee is to create a local event centered around African American Hair "This shows that cultural celebrations don't just happen in big cities like Atlanta—they thrive right here in Columbus," says Alex.
Participation in the Loc Jubilee is open to everyone. The event organizers are currently seeking new committee members, volunteers and vendors. Those interested can donate hair and health-related products, become vendors or volunteer their time. To get involved, contact the library at 706-243-2785 or via email at MLT@CLG.org.
