In the heart of Columbus, Larry Nelson's beauty & barber supply store stands as a testament to entrepreneurial spirit, community resilience and Black enterprise, marking 25 years of continuous operation against significant economic challenges.
Nelson, 71, transformed a modest $5,000 bank loan into Larry's Beauty & Barber Supply, located at 1147 Henry Ave. Unit A. The thriving local business has become a cornerstone of the community's beauty and barbering industry.
His journey began in 1999, following 18.5 years of working for another company. Driven by a lifelong entrepreneurial dream that traces back to his childhood selling watermelons by the roadside.
"I always wanted my own business," Nelson said. "As a Black businessman, I overcame significant challenges, competing against 27 other businesses in the same market."
For Nelson, success is not just about selling products, but about building relationships and contributing to the community that has supported him for more than a quarter-century.
The beauty supply industry has undergone dramatic transformations during Nelson's tenure. What was once dominated by jerry curls has evolved into a landscape of weaves and braids, with service prices skyrocketing. Haircut prices have increased from $10 to at some places $50, while wash-and-set services can range from $50 to $75.
Nelson's success stems from more than just business acumen. He attributes his longevity to maintaining personal relationships with customers, continuously learning from younger generations and prioritizing community connections. His store has become more than just a retail space – it's a community hub where conversations flow freely and customers feel valued.
As the beauty industry continues to evolve, Nelson remains adaptable, staying attuned to changing trends. His motto remains simple yet powerful: create a welcoming environment where customers feel valued and understood.
"We don't rush people here," Nelson emphasized. "We focus on building genuine connections."
The business is truly a family affair. Located in a spacious storefront, the enterprise includes a barbershop operated by his son Brian, who works two evenings a week, and a boutique run by Nelson's wife. The store also offers opportunities for local beauticians and barbers to establish themselves.
Financial discipline has been crucial to Nelson's success. He advises young entrepreneurs to be careful with their earnings, emphasizing that every dollar must be strategically allocated.
"You can't spend money fast," he warned. "Every time you sell a product, you've got to replace that product. That $10 has to go 10 different ways – covering light bills, water bills, rent, inventory and taxes."
The store's clientele reflects Columbus's diverse community, with Nelson proudly serving customers of all backgrounds. Military personnel, in particular, have been supportive of his black-owned business, contributing to its growth and reputation.
Despite being 71 years old, Nelson shows no signs of slowing down. He hopes to continue operating until he's at least 75. Driven by a passion for his work and a love for customer interaction, his health and continued enthusiasm have been key factors in maintaining the business's success.
Nelson's journey represents more than just a business story. It's a narrative of perseverance, community support and the entrepreneurial spirit that defines small business ownership in America.
From a $5,000 loan to a thriving community institution, Larry's Beauty & Barber Supply stands as a powerful example of what determination and hard work can achieve.
